Before making any investment, it's imperative to thoroughly read the relevant disclosure documents. It's important to note that this does not apply to direct investments in stocks or shares. In Australia, for products like managed funds and ETFs, this document is known as a Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). The PDS provides vital information that you need to be aware of before investing, including details about the fees, the risks associated with the product, and the amount invested by others, which can offer insights into the product's liquidity.
Additionally, in Australia, there is a secondary document called a Target Market Determination (TMD). This document contains information regarding the suitability of the product for different investor segments. If you are considering investing in an Australian domiciled investment, the PDS and the TMD are available on the product issuer's Australian website and should be read thoroughly before making a decision. Understanding these documents is crucial to making an informed investment decision.
Risks and Warnings:
Investing involves various kinds of risks. Below is an elaboration of the types of risks you should consider:
- Mismatch Risk: The risk that the investment you choose may not align with your financial goals and needs. Before investing, make sure that the asset or security is appropriate for your financial situation.
- Inflation Risk: The risk that the real value of your investment may be eroded over time by inflation. In other words, your investment may not grow at or above the rate of inflation, reducing your purchasing power.
- Interest Rate Risk: Changes in interest rates can affect the market value of an investment. Typically, a rise in interest rates causes the market value of existing fixed-rate investments to fall, and vice versa.
- Market Risk: The risk that the overall market will decline, thereby affecting the value of individual investments irrespective of the quality or stability of any particular investment.
- Market Timing Risk: The risk related to the timing of buying or selling assets. Entering or exiting the market at inopportune times can negatively affect your investment performance.
- Risk of Poor Diversification: Investing heavily in a particular asset or a small group of assets can expose you to more risk compared to spreading your investments across different types of assets.
- Currency Risk: If you are investing in assets denominated in a foreign currency, you risk losing money due to fluctuations in currency exchange rates.
- Liquidity Risk: The risk that you may not be able to quickly sell an asset at a fair market price. Illiquid assets may require more time and/or a lower price to convert them to cash.
- Credit Risk: The risk that the institution you invest with may default on its obligations, such as failing to make scheduled interest or principal payments.
- Legislative Risk: The risk that a change in laws or regulations could affect an investment. This may include, but is not limited to, tax laws, corporate regulations, and government policies.
- Gearing Risk: The risk associated with borrowing to invest. Gearing can magnify gains but also increases the magnitude of losses and the cost of investment.
- Circle of Confidence Risk: If you have a small circle of confidence, meaning you only believe you have sufficient knowledge in a specific sector such as technology companies, your portfolio will not be well diversified. This increases concentration risk, exposing you to potential volatility and losses specific to that sector. A downturn in the technology industry, for example, could disproportionately affect your investments and result in substantial losses.
When you invest, your capital is at risk. By investing in shares and other growth assets, you confirm that you understand that the minimum investment time period for these investments is generally at least 7 years.
